Improving Cancer Services in Our Area Back to idea list
The Forum is currently working with the hospital on a bid to Macmillan for support in providing a cancer information and support centre in Telford - we've written or emailed over 100 groups asking for written support but only received 6 replies.

Thanks very much for your comments. You've picked up on some very valid points; regarding the entitlement to free prescriptions for cancer patients, the forum is in the process of getting posters printed to go up in the hospitals to let people know. Thinking of asking GP practices to put them up as well, if anyone has any other suggestions on where we could put them let us know.

I personally think it is a great idea. My mum died from cancer a few years ago, and doctors only officially diagnosed her with secondary cancer of the liver 3 days before she died. The little contact we did have from the McMillan nurses was fantastic. Having an info centre would be great to see all the resources that are available for people diagnosed with cancer and their families. Often it is the families that have little support and do not always want to ask the person about the cancer, as fear of upsetting them or their own feelings getting in the way, but just wants information but do not know where to turn. Having a one stop shop, so to say, would be great. For instance many people do not realised they maybe entitled to certain benefits including prescription charges. Also when in a crisis situation you do not want to be ringing around different organisations asking what support there is. Those who have been affected by cancer will know the different emotions and turmoil you can go through and I feel that having a place that you contact for information and signposting, who truly appreciate the difficulties faced for cancer patient, survivors and their families would be fantastic.
