Email from Save Our Hospitals

In 2009, we joined forces with the people of Telford and Wrekin in the successful SOS PRH campaign to stop services, particularly Accident & Emergency, from being downgraded at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital.
As someone who supported us then we are contacting you because now is the time for our united voice to be heard again as part of the consultation on new proposals for changing services at Shropshire’s two main hospitals – the PRH and Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH).
Please don’t stay silent. Make your views heard in one of two ways:
Come to the consultation meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 16 February 2011 at the Holiday Inn, St Quentin Gate, Telford
Go online to www.ournhsinshropshireandtelford.nhs.uk and give your views by March 14.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I STAY SILENT?
This latest round of consultation is our chance to save services and stop our local hospitals from being taken over by a hospital trust from outside the area.
If the consultation comes out against the proposals, we can expect to have changes imposed on us. We could lose key hospital services to other more specialised hospitals outside this area and fewer services would be provided at the PRH and RSH.
SO WHAT ARE THE NEW PROPOSALS?
The new proposals include:
Ø The creation of a women and children’s centre at PRH. Head and neck services would also relocate to PRH – this is because a high volume of Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) cases are procedures for children.
Ø The creation of an acute surgery centre at RSH, for acute inpatient vascular surgery, colorectal surgery and upper gastro-intestinal surgery. Patients who need access to emergency surgery at PRH would have a non-resident on-call team of experienced surgeons. Other acute surgery will be transferred to RSH or dealt with through urgent outpatient and day case on the PRH site.
Ø Medical patients would access services on both sites as they do now.
Ø Both hospitals would continue to offer outpatient services, day case surgery, midwife led maternity, emergency and inpatient orthopaedic surgery and 24-hour A&E.
It is our belief that both hospitals would gain and lose significant services under these proposals, but each will maintain full A&E cover, which we have always fought for.
